Why Visit Essaouira: The Enchanting Coastal City?

Many know Morocco for its desert, but discovering Essaouira: The Enchanting Coastal City was the turning point of my journey.

If Marrakech is the pulsing, frenetic heart of Morocco, Essaouira is its serene, salty, and deeply artistic soul.

Imagine swapping the roar of motorbikes for the cry of seagulls, and the intense aroma of spices for the fresh breeze of the Atlantic. Known as Africa's "Wind City," this coastal gem isn't just a tourist destination; it’s a state of mind that invites you to pause and, above all, to begin anew.

What makes Essaouira a unique place?

Unlike the intensity of other imperial cities, Essaouira is painted in blue and white. Its imposing 18th-century ramparts embrace a Medina that is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where life flows at a much gentler and more welcoming pace.

  • The Medina and its Artistic Alleyways: Walking here is a balm for the soul. The streets are wide, filled with hidden galleries and the scent of Thuya wood. It’s the perfect place to get lost and find yourself, at your own pace.

  • The Port and the Blue Boats: Watching fishermen unload the day's catch is a reminder of the simplicity and strength of real life. A visual spectacle that seems frozen in time.

  • The Ramparts and the Skala de la Ville: The fortifications with bronze cannons facing the ocean offer the most spectacular sunset in the world. There, the wind blows so hard it seems to sweep away everything that no longer belongs to us.

A Week of Transformation: My Turning Point

I could describe Essaouira simply as a geographic destination, but for me, it was the place where I finally broke out of my own cocoon.

For a long time, I lived in a cocoon I created myself. Inside, I felt protected but also limited, always depending on something external to validate my steps or guide me through the world. But this time, something changed. An unexpected spark gave me a courage I didn't know I had, and I pushed past my limits to cross the ocean alone, heading to a country completely different from anything I knew. I didn't go to be a tourist; I went to live an intensity my heart was craving.

In Marrakech, I was challenged by colors and energies that tested my limits. But it was in Essaouira where the whirlwind of emotions—expectations, uncertainties, and everything I was processing internally—finally found a place to rest.

There was one specific moment, sitting alone on the sand, as the strong wind disheveled my hair. Looking at the horizon where the blue of the sky melts into the ocean, I understood: travel is not about what you see, but about who you become while seeing it. This week was my turning point. What I found there was an inexplicable energy that gave me a clarity I wasn't even looking for, but that Morocco imposed upon me.

I learned about resilience in the Medina and about the necessary detachment facing the sea of Essaouira. I realized that, regardless of any external encounter, the real gain in strength was the one I found within myself.

I changed. I returned home with a suitcase full of pashminas and memories of the medinas, yes, but with something far more valuable: my autonomy. Today, I am living a personal record of nearly nine months in a state of presence and peace I hadn't experienced in decades. I’ve made peace with my own rhythm and discovered that my best company is myself. The silence and strength of that coast taught me that I am much stronger than my fears; I am, finally, free.
